[Apple ID]Cannot Reset Security Questions. We do not have sufficient information to reset your security questions.

Posted on December 19, 2025 by Derrick

Introduction

Recently, I discovered a significant security vulnerability in Apple’s account system—one that can allow unauthorized access to your old, legacy, or unused Apple ID. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way after my account was compromised. Despite spending hours on the phone with customer support and trying every recommended solution, I found that if you follow the standard recovery process, Apple is unable to help. They cannot reassign account ownership or even close your account.

Background

Here’s how the loophole works:

By default, Apple accounts require multi-factor authentication (MFA). For newer accounts, this typically involves a trusted device, like your iPhone. However, my account was created years ago and was protected only by security questions.
I had set complex, random answers for my security questions, making them difficult to guess. One day, I received an email from Apple notifying me of a failed password reset attempt. I immediately changed my password to another strong, random string. A few days later, I was shocked to receive another email—this time confirming that my password had been successfully reset by someone else.
I used Apple’s iForgot feature to regain access and reset my password. However, the hacker had already changed my security questions and date of birth. Now, to fully access my account (including iCloud), I needed to answer the new security questions—answers I didn’t know. When I tried to reset the security questions, I got the following message:

Cannot Reset Security Questions. We do not have sufficient information to reset your security questions.

The Endless Loop

Both the hackers and I wanted full control of my Apple account. I still had access to my email, which allowed me to reset my password—but not the security questions. The hacker, on the other hand, knew the new security answers and date of birth, enabling them to reset the password and gain full access. This led to a frustrating cycle: every time I received a notification, I would reset my password, only for the hacker to do the same. This happened multiple times a day and was incredibly stressful, but I was determined not to give up my account.

The Solution

Apple accounts require MFA, but in my case, my account wasn’t linked to any Apple hardware, so MFA defaulted to security questions. Since I didn’t know the answers, I couldn’t bypass this step to regain full access.
To resolve this, I needed to reset the MFA by adding a new authentication method. I attempted to pair my account with an old iPhone, but it didn’t work. However, when I tried with a modern MacBook, I was finally able to link my device and restore full access to my account.

Conclusion

This experience revealed several serious issues with Apple’s account security:

  • Security questions can be reset by a hacker without access to your email.
  • You must know your current security answers to reset them, creating a frustrating loop if they’ve been changed or compromised.
  • Customer support is unable to restore account ownership or close compromised accounts.
  • It’s possible to reset MFA by simply adding another method, which can be exploited.

If you value your security and privacy, think carefully before relying solely on the Apple ecosystem. Stay safe, and always keep your account security up to date.
